Toomey pushes leaders to force spending cuts”
Biography
Since January 1999, Pat Toomey has had the privilege to represent all of Lehigh and Northampton counties, and a portion of Montgomery County in the United States House of Representatives.
Prior to his election to Congress in 1998, Pat worked in both large and small business. Following his graduation from Harvard University in 1984, Pat started his career in international finance. After several years working in New York, London, and Hong Kong, he left the financial world and started a small business with his brothers. Pat owned and operated restaurants in Allentown and Lancaster, PA. As a small business owner, he experienced the challenges of meeting a payroll every week, maneuvering through the maze of federal regulations, and suffering through the overwhelming burden of federal, state and local taxes.
In Congress, Pat has worked to bolster the economy and increase opportunities for high-paying jobs by lessening the federal tax burden and allowing business to prosper through less onerous federal regulations and increased export opportunities. In addition, Pat has been a crusader to reduce frivolous and wasteful government spending so that we have the resources for our priorities like securingSocial Security and providing prescription drug coverage to our seniors who need it most. Pat has been nationally
recognized as a leader in the fight to restore fiscal responsibility in Washington, receiving numerous awards such as “Hero of the Taxpayer” from Americans for Tax Reform, the “Golden Bulldog” award from Watchdogs of the Treasury, Inc., and “Treasury Guardian” from Taxpayers for Common Sense.
In addition, Pat has been a leader on healthcare issues, working to make Medicare more patient-friendly, HMOs more responsive, and providing doctors greater access to medical malpractice insurance. Pat was named Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Spine Specialists, and also has the support of the American Medical Association, and many other healthcare provider groups.
Pat’s efforts to revitalize the economy and assist workers and small businesses were rewarded when he was appointed chairman of a subcommittee on small business. Small business groups, such as the National Federation of Independent Businesses and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, have bestowed the “Guardian of Small Business” and the “Spirit of Enterprise” awards on Pat.
Pat is now running for re-election because he believes there is still much more work to be done. During his final term in Congress, Pat is looking forward to working with President Bush to revitalize the economy, provide long-term retirement security, and provide the men and women serving in our nation’s military the resources necessary to win the war against terrorism.
Pat resides in Zionsville, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Kris, and their two children, Bridget and Patrick.
